Markets

The market for Burundi specialty coffee is growing among international coffee buyers and consumers. Discriminating importers and roasters in the US, Japan and Europe are taking note of the rapid improvement of coffee quality in Burundi and the concurrent growth of its specialty coffee sector. Production of high quality Burundi coffee is rising steadily with this marketplace demand.  With a highly developed infrastructure to support its coffee trade Burundi is successfully cultivating new specialty coffee markets and a sustainable base of trading partners around the world. Supporting this growth are an expanding number of coffee washing stations, dry mills, exporters in Burundi, as well as importers/roasters around the world.

An important step in building sustainable markets and long term relationships with buyers has been the development of an experience core of professional cuppers and cupping capacity in Burundi.

To expand these relationships and to ensure that Burundi coffee will meet the quality standards expected of our buyers and roasters, InterCafé Burundi has been established as a spearhead for coffee marketing and promotion.  As part of this effort, InterCafé has taken initial steps to create a Coffee Quality Center (CQC) based in a central and easily accessible location in Bugarama. The CQC will serve serve as a welcome and information center for international buyers, a state of the art cupping laboratory (with in-house cupping team) for evaluating coffee samples, and as a classroom facility equipped for coffee quality training.
